Do what you want to do—not what others expect you to do
Kit Lan LoArtificial Intelligence (AI) is predicted to significantly impact white-collar jobs, potentially leading to displacement and job losses across various sectors (Source: Wall Street Journal). The roles most vulnerable to AI are those involving repetitive, data-heavy tasks that require little human interaction, empathy, or creativity. Naturally, people may panic when they lose their jobs—but I believe it can also be a chance to reflect on what you truly want to do with your life.
I remember when I told my friends I wanted to quit my job at an investment bank. Almost all of them thought I was crazy. I had what many considered a dream job—high salary, great benefits, and my company even paid for client dinners at upscale restaurants.
But for me, making money has never been the ultimate goal. Of course, I need money to survive. But the extra income wasn’t worth the constant stress: no room for mistakes on the trading floor, answering phones the moment they rang, and seeing people get laid off every quarter. I realized—I didn’t want to live like that for the rest of my life.
That’s when I began to meditate and explore hypnosis, in an effort to reconnect with myself. I discovered that helping people genuinely makes me happy, and I became deeply interested in psychology. This led me to return to school to study clinical psychology while continuing to offer private hypnotherapy sessions.
The more I worked with clients, the more I realized how much I still wanted to learn. My life transformed further—I moved from Hong Kong to the United States, closed my private practice, and founded my company, Life Performance Education (LPE), to share my skills and knowledge with others.
We only have one life.
Do what you want to do—not what others expect you to do.
